Heath Today
Heath is a welcoming church with a mixed age range, but mainly at the older end. We have 60 members and about 25 adherents at present. Our junior church is currently quite small with only two regulars, but we have a strong Junior Church staff who are enthusiastic to welcome any visitors or new Junior Church members. We feel we are a traditional congregation but are responsive to new ideas and are forward looking.
Many of our members are very committed to the church and work tirelessly in all areas of church life. Elders have responsibilities for each area but are ably supported by others who help with visiting the elderly and organising our social groups and functions.
We have a worship group who sometimes plan and lead services. We try to show prayerful concern for anyone in need and since 1998 have had a telephone based prayer tree that gives prayer support quickly when needed. In the past we have ran Alpha groups and have found these beneficial, but have not ran any in recent years. We are however currently exploring vision for life and have had a few study sessions based on this material.
Financially, we are not a strong church, but our members rise to the challenge of doing God's work on a minimal budget. At Christmas 2008 we opened our doors to the surrounding community for a Christmas Party (at no cost to the individual) and welcomed around 15 children and 20 or so adults. We had carol singing with mince pies.
We have three youth organisations including Pilots, catering for around 50 children. We welcome children in Communion, particularly on special occasions. We have 4 parade services a year where the young people from the organisations join us for all age worship, and we have all age worship normally on the first Sunday of each month. In the not too distant past we had a thriving junior church (35 youngsters up to age 18) but these have unfortunately moved on to Universities or bowing to peer pressures to join in other activities on Sunday mornings. However, some of these young people help in leading the Pilots group during the week, and we often see large groups of young people at special services like Christmas eve.
We no longer have a regular organist, but we are fortunate to have a number of talented and willing players who join us on a regular basis. We also have members who play other instruments and these are sometimes used in our worship.
We feel we are a welcoming church and try to look out for newcomers or members in need. We have two thriving ladies groups and also a Rambling Club and a 20+ Group, both of which are open to all members of the Group.
The Future
Over the last few years we have brought in new members at Heath some of whom have already taken office and are working for the Church and we hope that soon others will feel able to help also. As with most Churches we suffer from lack of leaders and some posts have not been filled as quickly as we would have liked. We have great hopes for our future based on our Worship, our Children our Care and Alpha which all show our commitment and faith in God.
Further Details
Heath Church was opened in 1890 in a predominantly middle class area of town. We are surrounded by housing of many different styles and ages, and so together with our neighbours St Jude's, we have a large community of people to serve. We are currently (2009) reviewing our layout in order to make best use of technology within our services, but as mentioned earlier we are not a wealthy church and finances can be restraining. However, we have a projector and screen set up and use powerpoint presentations regularly in our services. The sanctuary is well decorated with wall hangings, and a 'tryptich' depicting scenes from around Halifax. We have a loop system for the deaf and a ramp for wheel chair access.
Local Churches
Within a one mile radius there are one Methodist and two Anglican Churches, a Community Church and two Catholic Churches. We share worship with our nearest neighbours St Jude's around four times a year, and participate in our local Churches Together group.
