Pilots is a National Organisation which is sponsored by the Congregational Federation and the United Reformed Church. Heath Pilots was started in September 1996 with just 3 pilots. We now have 16 pilots, all of whom attend church (not all Heath URC) on a regular basis. Our Pilots are split into two age groups, Deck Hands and Adventurers, but most of our activities are done together as one group.
For Heath, pilots is an extension of Junior Church, but having time for games and more art and craft activities. We meet on a Wednesday night from 6pm until 7pm, and our work centres around six main themes :-
Praying, Interests, Learning, Overseas, Talents and Service.

Pilots Camp 2005
On Friday May 13th seven pilots and two officers set off for this year’s Pilots Camp at Barnstondale on the Wirral. Our numbers were less than normal since the date clashed with a family gathering, a scout camp and a school trip. In total there were 56 pilots and 19 officers. The weekend was to have two themes – Cowboys and Indians and Make Poverty History.
The weekend’s activities included a scavenger hunt, inter-watch competition, activity group including sports group, hama beads, quilling and several others, and a Cowboys and Indians party. We also played the ‘world feast game’, which is devised by Christian Aid to demonstrate the unfairness of the world and what we can do about it. Camp always includes morning and evening worship each day, and it was Heath’s turn to lead worship on Sunday morning, which our pilots did very well. There was a table tennis competition (which Hannah won) and a pool competition (which Jason won). The girls all slept in the new log cabin accommodation whilst the boys had to make do with the older dormitory style accommodation. I was camp Dad and Janet was first aider.
The first aid certainly kept Janet busy – my sister had a fall and had injuries from head to toe, Chris got a football in the eye, one person forgot his medication necessitating a visit to the local hospital to get replacements, and there were splinters, bumps and scrapes galore! Despite this, we all had a great time and will be looking forward to the next camp, which may be somewhere different as the improvements being made at Barnstondale also mean the prices keep going up.
