Carlton is situated near the town centre and so we are a gathered congregation. We have a range of ages in our fellowship including a number of young families.
We meet in a three-storey building, which was refurbished approximately 10 years ago.
There are facilities and access for people with disabilities and wheelchair users.
WORSHIP
In order to strengthen our own spiritual lives we hold a short prayer session following morning worship on two Sundays each month. These are led by volunteers from those attending. Our service stars at 9.45 am. We celebrate Holy Communion on the third Sunday in the month, our Parade service is on the first Sunday in the month.
House groups, organised by members of our fellowship, take place in the weeks following Easter.
Ecumenical Lenten groups are supported by a small number of our members.
Music for services is usually provided by our organist. We also have a music group who often play for parade services.
Our worship team regularly lead worship as do a number of elders.
Twice each year we share worship with the local Church of England and on the fifth Sunday of the month with the other churches in the Halifax Group.
Whilst our worship takes a traditional form it is varied in content.
YOUNG PEOPLE
We have both Boys' Brigade and Girls' Brigade companies. B.B. meets on Friday evenings and G.B. on Monday evenings. Many of the officers are church members and support Carlton in many ways. Parade services are supported by parents, as are other Brigade events, such as the annual enrolment service, display nights and social functions.
Our Junior Church, apart from the youngest children, is largely made up of members of the Brigades. Leaders teach on a rota basis.
FELLOWSHIP
Refreshments are served after each morning service, giving people chance to interact with each other in an informal way.
A ladies' group meets fortnightly during the summer, occasionally with members of the Parish Church Mothers' Union.
An evening group for ladies meets approximately monthly, usually for a meal out and draws a range of ages.
A men's group also meets approximately monthly for a range of activities such as ten pin bowling.
SUPPORT FOR CHARITIES
We are a Fair Trade church and whilst supporting this throughout the year we also hold an annual event to raise awareness of the movement.
We support other charities such as Christian Aid and Commitment for Life, also local ones such as Rotary, and work undertaken by other churches such as the Salvation Army.
Fund raising for ourselves, and others, takes the form of a Spring Fair, charity stalls, Sunday lunch and donating toys and food.
We are part of Churches Together in Central Halifax and support their events, the Street Angels and the cafe, situated in the town centre.
Our building is used regularly by many organisations, amongst them being choirs, a children's holiday club, West Yorkshire Mediation Service, and a dance school.
We hope we are welcoming to newcomers and caring towards one another, whilst continuing to learn more about, and preach, the Gospel.
Local Churches
Within a half mile radius virtually all denominations are represented and, whilst there is respect and warmth between the churches, there is great opportunity to develop more direct co-operation.
The Future
By enhancing our own Christian life, through fellowship, worship, prayer and learning, we trust that we will be enabled to fulfil our mission statement.
Mission Statement
'Jesus said, "Love one another". In response to this command, Carlton gives its people, time, and building to help and challenge the community to achieve this goal'.
